GIMP users must turn to one of the raw developers here as a first stage. As such, I did not test the popular free program GIMP, as it does not open raw files. Nor, in the few programs capable of the task, did I test image layering. However, I made no attempt to evaluate all these programs for a wide range of photo applications. That’s an essential workflow for time-lapse shooting, if not still-image nightscapes. I have assumed a workflow that starts with raw image files from the camera, not JPGs, for high-quality results.Īnd I have assumed the goal of making that raw image look as good as possible at the raw stage, before it goes to Photoshop or some other bit-mapped editor. I judged programs on how well they could match or beat this result.Ībove is the same image developed in Adobe Lightroom, to demonstrate how it can achieve identical results to Camera Raw, because at heart it is Camera Raw. Plus I added a “local adjustment” gradient to darken the sky at the top of the frame. Raw Image AFTER Development in Adobe Camera RawĪbove is the image after development in Adobe Camera Raw (ACR), using sliders under its Basic, Tone Curve, Detail, HSL, Lens Corrections, and Effects tabs. This image of the sky is designed to be composited with one taken without the tracker turning, to keep the ground sharp. But it does show up noise well, including hot pixels. Keep that in mind, as it will always look fuzzy in the comparison images. The camera was on a tracking unit (a Sky-Watcher Star Adventurer Mini) to keep stars pinpoints. The lens was the Sigma 20mm Art lens at f/2 and the camera the Nikon D750 at ISO 1600. Original Raw Image Out of the Camera, BEFORE Development Note: Click/tap on any of the screen shots to bring them up full screen so you can inspect and save them. This is the image I threw at all the programs, a 2-minute exposure of the Milky Way taken at Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park in southern Alberta in late July 2017. Touted as a Photoshop replacement, it isn’t there yet. However, it lacks some of the key functions (listed below) needed for nightscape and time-lapse work. It has an innovative interface and many fine features, and it allows layering and masking of multiple images. The “Pro” version of Pixelmator was introduced in November 2017. NOTE: Windows users might find Corel’s Paintshop Pro 2018 a good “do-it-all” solution – I tested only Corel’s raw developer program Aftershot Pro, which Paintshop Pro uses. It’s just that ON1’s license is “perpetual.” However, ON1’s cost to buy and maintain is similar to Adobe’s Creative Cloud Photo subscription plan. In fact, ON1 allows you to migrate your Lightroom catalog into its format. Of all the contenders tested here, this is the only program that can truly replace both Lightroom and Photoshop, in that ON1 has cataloguing, raw developing, and image layering and masking abilities. These programs can not only develop at least single raw images, if not many, but also offer some degree of image layering, compositing, and masking like Photoshop. Photoshop Contenders: Four Raw Developers with Layering/Compositing Yes, it’s free, but the learning curve is precipitous. It offers a bewildering blizzard of panels and controls, among them the ability to apply dark frames and flat field images, features unique among any raw developer and aimed specifically at astrophotographers. This free open source program has been created and is supported by a loyal community of programmers. DxO also recently acquired the excellent Nik Collection of image processing plug-ins, so we can expect some interesting additions and features. While it has an image browser, PhotoLab does not create a catalog, so this isn’t a full Lightroom replacement, but it is a superb raw developer. The ELITE version of what DxO now calls “PhotoLab” offers DxO’s superb PRIME noise reduction and excellent ClearView contrast enhancement feature. The MacOS version resembles the Windows Pro version. Only the Pro version offers the full suite of raw development features, in addition to cataloging functions. Windows users have a choice of either a Standard or Professional version. My question is, how well do they work? Are any serious contenders to replace Photoshop or Lightroom? Lightroom Contenders: Five Raw DevelopersĪCDSee Photo Studio (current as of late 2017)Ĭost: $60 to $100, depending on version, upgrades $40 to $60. Thus the popularity of these alternative programs. Though $120 for a year is not far off the cost of purchasing many of these other programs and perhaps upgrading them annually, many photographers prefer to purchase their software and not subscribe to it. Photoshop and Lightroom complement each other and are now available together, but only by monthly subscription through Adobe’s Creative Cloud service, at $10/month. Version 1.5 is about to launch (hopefully during NAB this week) with additional aspect ratios, improved object selection, individually posable legs for actors, a gyro camera control - and, most importantly, a launch on Android devices and Mac and PC computers. It launched loaded with characters, props, settings, lights and even lenses, and two updates have already followed, adding scalability for onscreen items, animatable cameras, new camera models, moveable keyframes and other features. Developed by Dan Fearing and a small team of Sacramento-based designers and coders, ShotPro already looks like a game changer in the world of DIY previsualization. The newest of these is ShotPro, an iOS app from that premiered on the App Store late last year. Just as pencil-and-paper storyboarding has by and large given way to computer-based previsualization software, high-end previs suites are now confronting much more budget-friendly software and apps. Building a virtual set has never been easier with intuitive multitouch controls. Here are the primary features of ShotPro: Video is no longer available: youtu.be/5lOU57fbtKo Our friend Matt Workman, a commercial cinematographer and pre-vis artist based in New York City (who also runs the excellent Cinematography Database website) recently put together a quick test run/review of ShotPro that shows off the power of this app to quickly and easily build detailed pre-vis animations that can then be shared with members of your crew. In short, it brings the power of the complex 3D modeling softwares traditionally used for pre-vis work to your fingertips, and it simplifies the process of creating detailed compositions that you can then share with collaborators. ShotPro is a pre-visualization app for the iPad and iPhone that is unlike any other on the market. While there's nothing wrong with doing these things by hand, it is nothing if not incredibly time consuming, and it makes the process of sharing this work with collaborators more tedious than it needs to be. Unfortunately, outside of higher budget projects that can afford dedicated pre-vis artists, many filmmakers still resort to traditional hand-drawn storyboards and overheads. In essence, pre-vis is among the best methods for a group of filmmakers to carry out a unified vision of a piece. It helps department heads get on the same page as one another, and it helps them to communicate complex technical ideas to their teams in a way that is uniquely visual. Pre-visualization is one of the most important, albeit underrated steps in the filmmaking process. The toughest thing about Pocket Racing is just the random factors are involved. The only way you're actually going to be able to put up serious competition is to buy new parts and switch them out regularly. Buy every part from each of these retailers, you're going to need them. The Pocket Circuit parts shop is the obvious place, but you can also purchase parts from the west park weapons dealer, the Ebisu Pawn Shop, and even Don Quijote. Purchasing new parts is really important, and they are sold at several different locations. Finally, you will challenge the Pocket Circuit Fighter and race him. Doing so will trigger another series of cutscenes, then go back to Pocket Circuit Stadium for yet another race. Afterwards, head to Stardust until you see the look-prompt come up. There you will meet Hideki, after a series of cutscenes he'll challenge you to a race at the Pocket Circuit Stadium, head back there and defeat him in a race. After you speak with the Pocket Circuit Fighter and he gives you the Golem Tiger, head to Club Sega on Theater Avenue to proceed with the substory. There is a great engine part you can receive called the Godspeed Motor Mark II if you complete this substory, so you should do it before starting the tournament. Completing The Fighter's Successor substory It isn't mandatory to complete The Fighter's Successor substory in order to enter a tournament, but it is recommended as it gives you additional items. If you talk to him again after that, you'll finally have the option to enter a tournament, customize your car, and even partake in test runs. You will need to accept that sub story in order to unlock Pocket racing, as he will give you the Golem Tiger(your first RC car) and some spare parts. As you approach you will meet the Pocket Circuit Fighter, after you talk to him for a bit you'll have the option to start The Fighter's Successor substory. Once you've perfected your server, you can then start enjoying your media by launching the UMS Web interface in your browser. So far only the homebrew community has brought this kind of functionality to UMS by tinkering with the source code, and it's far from reliable. But while Plex's take on that feature is convenient for free and paid users alike, I don't have confidence that UMS's version of remote access would be anything but confusing and complicated, like Serviio's. I was disappointed to find that Universal Media Server doesn't seem to offer remote access options like the ability for server owners to access their content outside the home. If you're feeling adventurous you can also hop over to the Transcoding Settings tab to adjust video quality and audio preferences, but the automatic settings should be just fine for all but the most discerning users. The handy Log tab tracks all changes in chronological order, so if something goes wrong you can retrace your steps to find a possible solution, if you can parse the technical language. Once you're finished, restart the server for your changes to take effect. You'll need to keep your media nice and manageable with different folders for music, movies, and photos. You'll want to change this as soon as possible or your new server will get cluttered with junk and the file structure will be messy. When it first launches, the program scans everything on your system. Moving down the tabs, Navigations/Share Settings is where you tell UMS which folders to make available on the server. Maybe the Xbox carried a grudge against a program based off of its gaming rival, as UMS ran just fine on a PlayStation 3 in my testing. Even then, I still had trouble getting my Mad Max-themed server to run on an Xbox One ($200.00 at eBay) (Opens in a new window) despite the fact the console is listed as compatible. It can get confusing, but just like with Serviio, you'll have to play around with these settings to get UMS to show up on your devices. General Configuration is where you'll adjust networking settings like which renderers to enable and make defaults, which router to stay bound to, and which open port on your firewall to go through. UMS automatically detects compatible media renderers on the network, from Windows Media Player to Google Chrome, to an Android phone, and displays IP addresses along with big, shiny graphics in the Status tab. You'll have to access this panel from your desktop toolbar since the program initially runs in the background. After downloading UMS to your PC, Mac, or Linux machine, you then start creating your server via the main panel. But it's not nearly as intuitive and friendly to casual users as our top pick, Plex. Installing and setting up Universal Media Server (UMS) is slightly less painful than getting fellow open source media server Serviio to work. (Opens in a new window) Read Our Plex Review You can even put all of your content on a network-attached storage (NAS) device and use that as your server if you don't want to burden your computer. By communicating with Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) devices, media servers can stream content on a range of devices including, say, laptops, game consoles, phones, and tablets connected to the same shared wired or wireless network. Universal Media Server, like most media servers, is based on pre-existing technology, in this case the PS3 Media Server. Universal Media Server isn't the easiest product for setting up your own home media server, but it will give you plenty of functionality without asking for a dime. But some software only gives you a taste of sweet streaming action before charging for the best features. Using a home media server to stream videos, music, and photos throughout devices on your home network is a wonderful, convenient thing. How to bypass iPhone disabled without a computer via Find My app. The answer is unfortunately: it depends! If you have a backup of the iPhone made before the messages were deleted (either iCloud or made in iTunes on your computer), you can either get the messages out of that backup, or restore the backup to get the messages for sure. To turn on iCloud Messages on your Mac: First, make sure you’ve signed the same Apple ID with your iPhone > Open Messages and click Preferences > Click iMessage and Enable Messages in iCloud. While it can be easy to assume that all risks bring negative consequences to the table, it’s essential to understand that positive risks can also occur during the project life cycle.Ī risk assessment matrix (sometimes called a risk control matrix) is a tool used during the risk assessment stage of project planning. Risks can appear related to any aspect of a project, including the budget, resources, processes, or technology, to name just a few. It improves the chances of successful project completion while reducing the consequences of any risk that occurs. According to the Project Management Institute (PMI), analyzing and managing risks is a key practice in project management. Risks in project management are unexpected events that may or may not occur and impact your project outcome in some way. What is a risk assessment matrix in project management? That’s what a risk assessment matrix is used for and why you need one for your projects. If only you had identified and assessed the risk during the project planning phase, you might have felt more prepared to overcome it. You never saw this one coming, so you have no idea how you’re going to get the project back on track and see it through to success. They start working tirelessly to meet the agreed-upon objectives - and then an unexpected risk meets you midway through the project. The project scope is defined, key stakeholders are in agreement, you’re confident you can stay within the budget, and the project team is ready to dive in.
